Artist films by Tobias Sandberger & Thitz
"All the films selected for this evening were shot in black-and-white. But even if they recall the earliest days of cinema, they were actually all produced between 1990 and 2001, and the recourse to early film history is contradicted by the use of what were at the time cutting-edge filming and processing techniques. Most of the films were originally made on video or Super 8 and only "blown up" to 16mm later. Two of the films featured – "The Message" (1990) and "Manage" (1997) – are part of a trilogy focusing on the characters Mr. Clown and Mr. Clock. By screening them at the Kunstverein, we are taking them back to the place where they were shot. "

The nationwide art project
This project used Thitzs Art as a communication media for motivating all national and international people to participate and so to vote for their favourite "Town" in all 50 States of the USA. It started with 300 Mio. E-Mails all over the world and found an end at 31.12.2003 with the "Winner -Town" Glenn Rose in Texas. The Project ended with the donation of the original Art works to the Museum of that Winner-Town. It was a very funny and charming project. Thitz experiences in New York at 11.9.2001
Monday: Manhattan – the exhibition at Alp Galleries is a go!
Press meeting at the German House, talks with museum officials.
Tuesday: Brooklyn Park Slope – my wife, performance artist Katharina Trost, was putting on her costume, the performance was to take place in NYC on a perfectly ordinary day. My DV-camera was ready to record the scene. Right then our landlady came over from her office – her face ashy pale… Sirens wailing everywhere in the streets, fire trucks racing past our residential area towards the city center, people crying; those who had escaped Manhattan’s skyscrapers came walking towards us across both bridges.
Wednesday: Back in Manhattan where the streets are strangely deserted.
"She planned to do that long prepared performance at this same day in Manhattan. We were already in the street on our way to Manhattan. Katharina walking towards Brooklyn Bridge in wearing her performance costume. I was ready to record the scene on videotape. As the attacks began our impression was that the peoples of New York were changing from the normal "working- very- hard- for- living -here" , to a kind of a "help-each-other" sense- done in the same intensity . "I was really impressed by the discipline and "calmness" of the people while walking for hours and hours over the bridges. We instantly felt a very strong familiarity with all that people and also an huge sorrow for all their losses. "That was much more important than any political interpretation of the events"Thitz said to a Journalist 2 days after the attacks.
In fact he had to wait more than 6 month before he was able to paint New York Paintings again. He says it was simply not possible to over paint the Twin Towers in older photos or even to paint the skyline, due to his own impressions at 9.11. Since the second year after the attacks Thitz parallels in his works the process of redevelopment of his favourite city. While painting his own ideas for a New New York - including that sad experiences. "His Paintings did not lose their positive expression but the knowledge of 9.11. now introduced in his work makes them even stronger and gives them a deeper philosophical background. " ( Magazine )
The documeted Video Material had also to wait 2 Years until Katharina Trost could begin with the film cut . "Even now it is hard to see the images and hear people cry" in the film. Because the performance did change its former meaning during the burning of the towers, Katharina did another Performance in the loneliness of Iceland called "The answer" in summer 2002 .
"We want to express our thanks to all the People of New York that encouraged us to continue with the performance and helping us through the chaos of metro and crowded streets." Thitz, DADA Katharina Trost 2003
